Congressional District 3 Candidate Harry Montoya to Ask Governor and Legislature to Correct Election Law
-Montoya Acts to Ensure Democratic Process and Fair Elections
(Santa Fe, NM) – District Three Congressional candidate, Santa Fe County Commissioner Harry Montoya, (Democrat) has consistently stated that the current method of electing Federal officials is Unconstitutional. “I question the motives behind this change as it has only served to disenfranchise the voters. This process narrows the selection of candidates to a few hundred delegates rather than rely on the wisdom and preference of the collective voters of New Mexico.”
Montoya further stated that, “rather than face costly and confrontational legal challenges, I ask Governor Richardson and the New Mexico Legislature to realize that (with House Bill 1156) a mistake was made and repeal this transgression of the open process used to elect candidates since statehood, and in accordance with the US Constitution. I ask that they declare this an emergency and correct it immediately during the 2008 legislative session.”
Montoya is an active member of both the Santa Fe County, and the State Democratic Party. He also serves on the State Central Committee and will be an automatic delegate to the Pre-Primary Convention. “This is not just about any one candidate getting 20% of the convention delegates. I have been an active member of the Democratic Party for years and I am confident that I have tremendous support within the party regulars. This is about ensuring the Democratic election process so that all voters in our party can have an opportunity to choose the candidate who they feel will best represent them in Washington DC.”
